The Vineyard Movement is most closely associated with the late John Wimber who became it’s leader in the early 1980’s.

Prior to his conversion, John’s background had been in the music industry, where he had worked with, most famously, The Righteous Brothers. There is no doubt that John’s passion for Jesus along with his great love for music and skill as a musician, influenced greatly the development of Vineyard Music, now used worldwide.

The UK got to know the Vineyard Movement through a series of Vineyard Conferences in the 80’s & 90’s led by John Wimber. What was so refreshing, was the way that everyone was encouraged to be involved in praying for people to be healed and to be expectant of the ‘signs and wonders’ of Jesus’ time. This profoundly simple, direct approach coupled with an intimacy in worship and a love for the Bible, immediately impacted the Church in the UK.

John Wimber encouraged the planting of churches worldwide. There are now autonomous regions around the world, collectively existing primarily for relationship, rather than governance. Vineyard Churches UK was released to function

in its own right in 1996 under National Director John Mumford. Poole Vineyard is affiliated to Vineyard Churches UK and Eire, which currently numbers around 100 churches.

At Poole Vineyard, we like to sum up who we are by using this phrase :

Ordinary people learning to receive, reflect and give away God’s extraordinary love.”

What does this mean?

Ordinary (Romans 12:3) We have no pretensions of being anything but ordinary people, we’re not ‘super-spiritual’ and would want to avoid any such connotation.

Learning (Matthew 11:29) We are disciples (learners) of Jesus Christ. We are learning together to become like him and do the things that he did. Our teaching is relevant to today and grounded in the Bible.

Receive The Bible says that we receive the knowledge of God’s love in Jesus for us from two sources; The Bible itself (Luke 24:27) and from the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Our desire is to embrace wholeheartedly the Message and the Messenger.

Reflect (Ephesians 1:6) We can only give back to God what he has first given to us. Worship is our primary expression of love given back to God. Worshipping together using contemporary music and a variety songs to help us, will always be our desire when we gather.

Give away (1John 3:11) The love God gives to us is for giving away to others. At the Vineyard, we place great value on good relationships and will always be looking for the opportunities God gives to reach out to others with the compassion of Jesus.

Extraordinary (Matthew 10:7-8) God is supernatural, his love is extraordinary. When we meet together under God’s kingdom rule and reign, we welcome and are expectant of signs and wonders of his manifest presence through the Holy Spirit.
